Candidate will support and be a key business advisor to the Merrill Lynch Houston Commodities Business in the areas of Indirect Tax compliance. This will include but may not be limited to Sales & Use Tax, Motor Fuels Tax and Property Tax compliance. Candidate will work in concert with and help direct the activity of outside tax preparation services. Candidate will direct and be accountable for the following:

• Maintain and implement internal tax policies and ensure compliance with State Sales & Use Tax and Property Tax requirements

• Work with outside tax contractors to ensure all tax returns are prepared accurately and filed timely

• Work with Business personnel to ensure new counterparties or new products are correctly analyzed and set up appropriately to ensure all taxable amounts are correctly captured

• Be the interface point with all internal or external audit queries

• Ensure any and all tax exemption certificates are properly garnered and maintained. Monitor and report any outstanding tax exposure from potential exemption or nexus issues

• Ensure integrity of data extracts from source systems the outside contractor uses to complete tax returns.

• Ensure any system conversions or changes are appropriately considered that may have an impact on data quality in the tax return process

• Be the primary interface point with Senior Management on all indirect tax issues impacting the business

Candidate will need to work seamlessly across organizational boundaries linking closely with BofA/ML Corporate Tax departments, local business Front office, Mid-office, Finance and Operations teams. Candidate will contribute to and assist in the management and development of departmental objectives and overall financial control.

Qualifications


• Bachelors degree in Accounting

• Minimum of 2 years experience of tax accounting preferably in a commodity trading environment.

• Technical knowledge: Specific knowledge of various State taxing jurisdiction requirements helpful but not required. Proficiency in MS Excel to organize datasets.

• Ability to work with IT effectively. This may include requirements gathering or oversight, testing of the application and execution of the application in a production environment.

• Effective communication and organizational skills. Will need to manage the development, operation and automation of processes

• Ability to effectively network with people and form relationships. This may consist of relationships with internal components of the organization who are providers or consumers of data and external State taxing authorities and external customers and clients.
