Position Summary



The Healthcare Principal SCO will facilitate and support the bank's objectives to increase earning assets while maintaining quality standards. This will be done by approving or declining commercial loans, and by working closely with assigned business units to negotiate and structure highly complex credit arrangements. Bank of the West seeks a proactive, solutions oriented banking professional in this role, somebody who can enable profitable business growth by forging strong relationships with business line leaders. This executive must possess a thorough understanding of the loan origination and underwriting practices, as well as the knowledge of portfolio management practices, including loss forecasting, and non-performing loan loss mitigation techniques.

Key Responsibilities


  • Facilitate healthcare commercial loan originations by working with line officers in structuring and development of loan proposals to meet the customers' or prospects' needs while conforming to bank and regulatory requirements.

  • Directly handle significant, highly complex loans and makes joint calls as needed.

  • Reinforce adherence & contribute to the development of the Bank's underwriting policies and procedures.

  • Implement and reinforce policies and procedures to comply with fundamental business and credit priorities of the bank.

  • Develop and conduct training classes on new or updated procedures.

  • Analyzes pertinent financial and credit data and makes final credit decisions (approval or declination) within signing authority. Recommend to higher level of authority if appropriate.

  • Interact with internal and external auditors on regulatory issues of quality and on related trends.

  • Assist in identifying potential troubled assets in assigned area.

  • Approve commercial loan risk ratings to ensure maintenance of a quality loan portfolio.

  • Perform reviews of specific portfolio composition and quality as assigned.

  • Interact with line units and service centers, operations, accounting, appraisal, legal and other related bank personnel.

  • Keep informed of competitors' rates and loan programs and recommends appropriate changes to current bank programs and rates.

Education
Required Education or Equivalent Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Finance, or Management;
  • Prefer MBA

Required Experience

  • 12 years minimum prior relevant experience

  • Seasoned, hands-on executive with deep experience in the Healthcare credit function within a large bank/financial services institution

  • Excellent understanding of commercial deal structuring, loan origination and servicing processes, portfolio management and loss mitigation activities

  • Strong quantitative, analytical skills and a deep knowledge of healthcare credit/ risk management.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop policies and procedures to manage the healthcare credit risk attributes of a portfolio.

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of loss mitigation activities and loan origination and servicing processes.

  • Proven ability to develop strategies and execute against a clearly defined tactical plan.

  • Strong leader and manager with the ability to attract, develop, and retain highly skilled employees.

  • High energy, collaborative business partner with the ability to work and navigate across organizational boundaries and develop relationships at all levels of the organization including internal (other members of senior management team) and external constituencies (i.e. rating agencies, regulators, outside auditors, etc.).

  • Change agent with ability to develop excellent business practices and focus on continuous improvement.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills - ability to listen, understand complex issues and clearly articulate both "big picture" and critical details.
